OUR MISSION:

The Levelland ISD Athletic Training Department is an integral part of the LISD Department of Athletics. The mission of LISD Athletic Training is to provide traditional sports medicine and athletic training services to every student-athlete at LISD. The services that are provided to the student-athletes consist of five categories:

  1. Prevention of Injuries to Athletes

  2. Identification, Evaluation, and Emergency Care of Athletic Injuries

  3. Rehabilitation of Athletic Injuries

  4. Educate Student Athletes of Health and Wellness

  5. Ensure that Student Athletes are a Priority

Our purpose is to provide our student athletes with the best quality of health care available. Under the guidelines of the University of the Interscholastic League, Texas State Board of Health and Human Services, Texas State Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers, National Athletic Trainers Association and Levelland Independent School DIstrict, LISD Athletic Training are devoted to using whatever affordable and attainable technology there is to carry out these services. Consistent with our purpose we strive to provide an athletic training department that is always proactive towards our student-athletes, by being approachable, helping decrease the risk of injuries, being able to be knowledgeable about rehabilitation for the athletes injuries; and promote a safe return to participation as soon as possible for an injured athlete.

Our main priority as a department is to place the needs of our student athletes first above all other considerations. We will always strive to be a complete department of success, by educating our student athletes about their injuries, health and wellness. The LISD Athletic Training Educational Student Assistant Program will enhance the healthcare provided to the student athletes while educating and challenging athletic training students in the field of sports medicine.

ABOUT ATHLETIC TRAINING

Levelland ISD employs two full time athletic trainers. These individuals are licensed by the state of Texas and certified by the Board of Certification. Recognized by the American Medical Association as allied health professionals, a credentialed athletic trainer practices a form of health care that includes prevention, recognition, assessment, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries. LISD staff athletic trainers are often one of the first health care providers on the scene for injury or illness a student-athlete may have. LISD staff athletic trainers are able to recognize, evaluate, and assess injuries and provide immediate care when needed. They are here to ensure that the student athletes of this school district have the utmost care when it comes to their athletic injuries. By being on site, LISD staff athletic trainers can provide care with minimal disruption to the student athletes participation in school activities. A credentialed athletic trainer practices under the direction of a licensed physician.

PRE-PARTICIPATION PHYSICALS & UIL PAPERWORK

RANK ONE PORTAL (LEVELLAND ISD ATHLETICS)

All students who participate in athletic activity at LISD must have a current physical on file in the office of the campus athletic trainer. Physicals are acceptable for 2 years. The athletic trainer may require you to obtain a new physical upon his/her discretion. Reasons may include such things as; new injury, illness, accident, or surgery. You may choose where to obtain this physical, however LISD offers opportunities at the end of the spring to obtain one through the district sports medicine team at a low cost. These dates will be posted after spring break every year.

MEDICAL DISQUALIFICATION/RETURN TO PARTICIPATION

Medical disqualification from participation is determined by collaboration between the student athlete’s physician and the LISD staff athletic trainers. The LISD staff athletic trainers work under the direct supervision of the physician and will follow his/her directions for treatment and rehabilitation of the student athlete. Under certain situations the LISD staff athletic trainers have the option of medically disqualifying a student athlete from participation when it is in his/her judgment that further harm would come to the athlete by participating.

If a student athlete is disqualified from participation by a physician, a physician is the only medical professional who can clear them to participate under the supervision of the athletic trainer. All athletes who see a physician, or are instructed to see a physician, must have a signed clearance by that physician before returning to participation. At no time will the athlete be given permission to participate by a parent, coach, or athletic trainer when it contradicts a physician's orders. The staff athletic trainer may return the athlete to participation when it does not contradict the orders of a physician.

It is recommended that the staff athletic trainer or coach be notified prior to taking an athlete to the doctor. Generally most injuries are minor in nature... i.e. sprains, strains, etc.., and can be rehabilitated and treated in the athletic training room.

If you choose to go to the doctor without notifying the athletic trainer or coach, then it is your responsibility to obtain the required paperwork from the doctor. If the athlete is medically disqualified from participation, the procedures as stated above will be followed.
