Over the last few years, the Levelland baseball team has developed a culture of success.

It’s become the expectation.

The Lobos can rest assured they haven’t steered off the path of establishing a successful program as they rallied from a rough start to their season to win a share of the District 2-4A title.

“We have such a good locker room,” said Levelland coach Brent Paris, whose team is 17-14 overall. “When you get one guy to believe, it’s OK. When you get two guys to believe, it’s OK. When you get 16 and they don’t care how old they are, what position they play, what role they play and you get culture. That is the No. 1 reason we have done such a great job of building out here.”

The Lobos were forced to take on the challenge despite losing 11 seniors — six of which were all-state players. Despite the turnaround, Levelland was in contention for a piece of the championship, which they earned, and enters the playoffs the No. 1 seed after winning a tie-breaking coin toss.

The Lobos, who split the title with Estacado, will start their run in the Class 4A playoffs against Dalhart at 7 p.m. Friday at Lubbock-Cooper High School. The second game is slated for 2 p.m. Saturday at Western Texas College.

The bi-district matchup is the first step in an attempt to return to the regional semifinals from a season ago, when the Lobos finished 32-6.

And there is no doubt in Levelland that the team can make a return trip, and possibly break through.

“We can prove everyone wrong that says we aren’t going to do it this year,” Lobos senior shortstop Zack Estrada said. “We can go as far as we want and play as long as we want till they tell us we can’t play anymore.”
