Chris Gerber, Sr., Levelland

It wasn’t looking good for the Lobos down by eight at halftime in a true District 2-4A Division II championship game last Thursday against Estacado.

Chris Gerber took matters into his own hands from there with two second-half touchdowns, including the game-winning score with 1:32 left in the contest, toward 352 total yards in a 27-20, come-from-behind win. He’s the Lone Star Varsity Male Athlete of the Week after pulling in 34.6 percent of the fan vote.

Gerber is one of two area quarterbacks with at least 1,000 rushing and passing yards, and Levelland will lean on him even further in the Class 4A Division II postseason.

“Chris is a guy that’s a team captain, brings leadership to our team and is our go-to guy,” Lobos coach Curtis Lowery said. “When momentum is going the other way, he’s the guy we’re looking for to make a play. He’s just a huge part of this team.”

Levelland (7-3) faces Monahans (5-5) at 7 p.m. Friday at Andrews High School.
