Brenden Duncan has come a long way in his golf career.

The Levelland senior knows just by looking at his first-round score of 77 on Wednesday at the Region I-4A boys golf tournament at Shadow Hills Golf Course.

“My first score ever was a 126 at the Scurry County Country Club,” Duncan said, cracking a smile. “I’ve definitely been able to hit the ball a lot better than my freshman year. Obviously, making putts is also a plus and placing the ball on the green.”

Duncan, along with teammates TJ Brooks (81 first-round score), Hunter Read (78), Isaiah Diaz (87) and Kelton Johnson (93), did their best to accomplish those girls throughout an 18-hole journey on a cool, breezy day at the tree-lined Par-72 course.

Levelland is ranked seventh, ending Wednesday with a respectable score of 322. Argyle leads the pack with a first-round 292 followed by Monahans (295) and Andrews (304).

“We figured we could get some pretty good scores (Wednesday) because of the rains. We knew the greens and the fairways would play a little slower, but there’s also some good teams here, too,” Levelland coach Stan Weatherred said. “We really wanted to play aggressive. And, Wednesday, was the day to shoot straight at the pins. ... They’re playing some of their best golf right now, but this is one of the best regions in the state.”

Early on, Duncan admitted he wasn’t playing too well after carding a pair of double bogeys. But he kept cool and turned things around in his final nine holes.

“I felt like I was striking the ball much better,” said Duncan, who bogeyed No. 1 and made par on the others during his play on the front-nine. “I had a feeling that this was going to be our last tournament, and I wanted to play good. So, I was aiming for the fairways and greens all day.”

Duncan, along with his teammates, are more than familiar with Shadow Hills as the Lobos typically play the course at least twice a year. He’s hoping it will be a key reason the quintet can try and find a spot in the top three spots and qualify for state as a team.

The top three squads, along with the top three individuals not on those teams, punch their ticket to the state meet.

Levelland is scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. Thursday from the No. 1 hole. Snyder, which is in ninth, is set for an 8:50 p.m. Thursday start.

Medalist Cason Johnson, of Seminole, is set to start his round at 9:40 a.m. Thursday at the No. 10 hole. He carded a first-day 75.

“We’ve got to play a lot better,” Duncan said of what has to happen on Day 2. “We have to figure something out to get our scores down. We can get some scores down; I know that.”
